The story

History

The Hassan II Mosque was commissioned by King Hassan II to mark his 60th birthday and inaugurated in 1993 after seven years of construction. Built half on land and half over the Atlantic — a nod to the Quranic verse describing God's throne above the water — it pushes traditional Moroccan craft to monumental scale. Some 6,000 master artisans cut, carved and inlaid every column, cedar ceiling and zellij panel by hand. The minaret reaches 210 metres and projects a green laser toward Mecca at night. It is one of only two mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors.

Getting there

Getting there

The mosque sits on the corniche, a 25-minute walk west of Casa-Port station. Tram line 1 (Mohammed V stop) drops you a few blocks inland. From the airport, a taxi costs 250–300 MAD and takes 35 minutes; the express train to Casa-Port runs every hour and is faster in traffic. Within Casablanca, a petit-taxi from anywhere central is 15–25 MAD.

Best time to visit

Best time to visit

Tours run year-round. October to April brings cooler air (15–22°C) and clear Atlantic light; May to September can hit 30°C and the esplanade offers no shade. The 09:00 tour is the calmest. For photographs, return at sunset when the limestone façade turns gold and the laser beam fires from the minaret. Friday morning is closed for prayer.
